 The Bible

There are a couple of basic ways to view the Bible.  It can be seen as the story of human beings' relationship with God or it can be understood to be the story of God's relationship with human beings.  If it is only our story, then it is in constant revision since it is based upon our experience.  There is no firm foundation to stand upon, because each human being has different experiences that he or she can claim as being a revelation of the divine.  When this form of foundation is used, the Scriptures can be discounted based upon cultural biases and personal preferences.
In the Anglican Church, we have a high regard for the Bible as being the inspired Word of God.  We adhere to Article Six of the Thirty-Nine Articles which states: "Holy Scripture containeth all things necessary to salvation: so that whatsoever is not read therein, nor may be proved thereby, is not to be required of any man, that it should be believed as an article of the Faith, or be thought requisite or necessary to salvation. In the name of the Holy Scripture we do understand those canonical Books of the Old and New Testament, of whose authority was never any doubt in the Church."  For us, the Bible is a living text that can speak to us across time and space.  We believe it speaks of a God who can be known through the revelation of His Son, Jesus Christ.  Our theology is based upon our church's 500 years of Biblical studies, church traditions and the combined application of centuries of human reason.  Literally tens of millions of Christians have read and found the Bible to be a treasure of wisdom, comfort and personal transformation.  In the early days of the Christian Church, when attempts were made to destroy copies of Biblical scrolls in order to destroy the Christian message, men chose to be tortured and put to death rather than reveal the secret hiding places of the Scriptures.
At the Anglican Church of Saint Paul, we study the Word of God because we find within its holy pages a glimpse into the glorious person of God.  The Bible interacts with us and helps us to become better servants to the Lord.  We listen to God whisper to us through the texts and because they are His inspired words, we wrestle with all the words of the texts - not just those that we enjoy hearing.
